JAIPUR, India : The death toll from monsoon flooding in Indias northern desert state of Rajasthan topped 150 Sunday, but officials said that number could double.
People have been killed in parts of the state since Wednesday, when monsoon rains started, the CNN-IBN Indian news channel reports.
Government officials called the situation very critical and estimated the death toll hit at least 300.
In one village 40 people, including a priest, were swept away in a torrent of water as 3 inches of rain fell in 36 hours, The Indian Express of New Delhi reported.
Navy divers searched for bodies in towns and villages immersed in water.
In another area a 30-foot-high wall of water swept across a desert, leaving craters where there were once sand dunes.
