Portrayal of Sikh Gurus in NCERT textbooks: BJP to take issue to Parliament
Chandigarh : With the Jaipur incident of cutting of hair of a Sikh boy hurting the BJP badly, its Punjab unit has picked up the issue of blasphemous references in NCERT books to take on the Congress.
Sensing that the Jaipur controversy has affected its prospects in Punjab, the BJP is now attacking the Congress on the issue of references to Sikh Gurus in NCERT books.
The party is all set to organise protests all over the country to ensure that the references to the Sikh Gurus are removed from NCERT books. National secretary of the BJP Harjit Singh Grewal told The Indian Express that in October 2001, the Director (Academics) of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had issued directions to all heads of institutions affiliated to the CBSE, pointing out that these portions had been deleted from history books with immediate effect.
Releasing copies of the letters, Grewal said all principals had been told that these portions are not to be taught in the respective classes or discussed in the classrooms. Besides, it was decided that no questions would be set in any examination to evaluate the students understanding of the contents of the portions, he said.
