Admissions for the post graduate (PG) courses at the Goa Medical College (GMC) have taken an unexpected turn this year with a petition filed by two MBBS doctors at the Bombay High Court at Goa. Fears are that there is a likelihood of delay in admissions to the PG courses.
While the two doctors have alleged that they were not ranked fairly on the merit list, the other 85 doctors competing for the 51 PG seats have no option but to wait and watch the judgement of the High Court. A group of these doctors when contacted said that according to the Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines the PG term is scheduled to start on May 2. While the PG course should be completed within three years of the date of commencement, time is precious for the PG students.
The MBBS doctors also fear that if the High Court order is in favour of the two petitioners Amit Jain, from Jaipur and Afzal Siddiqui from Ponda both MBBS doctors from the GMC, then the counselling and seat allotment for the PG admissions which has already been conducted on April 24, will be considered null and void. Hence, the other doctors who have already been awarded the seats of their choice might have to settle for other seats owing to changes of position of Jain and Siddiqui on the merit list.
