13-year-old Rajasthani girl resists forced marriage

Filed under:

Jaipur : A 13-year-old girl showed immense courage and stopped her own wedding on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya, a day on which tens of thousands of weddings are solemnised in the country.

The minor, Sushila, had been living with her widowed mother in Hanumanpur village of Tonk district, situated around 100 km from the Rajasthan capital. She was being forced by her mother and maternal grandfather to get married on Akshya Tritiya.

Hundreds of child marriages are reported from the desert state on this particular day.

Resisting the verdict of my mother, I had to suffer badly at the hands of her my own kin, Sushila told IANS.
