Pottery of Jaipur

The use of blue glaze on pottery made from Multani mitti, or Fuller’s earth, is essentially an imported technique, first developed by Mongol artisans who combined Chinese glazing technology with Persian decorative arts. This technique travelled south to India with early Muslim potentates in the 14th century. During its infancy, it was strictly used to make tiles to decorate mosques, tombs and palaces in Central Asia.

Jaipur is well known for its blue art pottery. This craft had its beginning in the first part of the 19th century. Blue pottery came to India from Persia and Afghanistan, but the Jaipur craftspersons learnt the art from the Delhi and Multan potters. After the Mughal era, there was a temporary lull till the craft was revived by master craftsman Kirpal Singh Shekhawat.

Miniature paintings are today among the most sought after souvenirs from Rajasthan. All major centers of miniatures, namely Kishangarh, Udaipur, Jaipur and Marwar have their own styles of depicting religious and court scenes. Paintings of women is another theme, which Kishangarh has perfected as the Indian Mona Lisa.

Pichhwais of Nathdwara wholly depict the scenes of life of Lord Krishna. Phad is another style painted on long cloths using red colors, which mostly depict the entire life story of popular local legend Pabuji.

Jaipur is also well known for its carpets and made different types of carpet. Carpet industry of Jaipur has surpassed many other centers in terms of extremely fine craftsmanship on wool and silk. An amazing variety of carpets in Persian, Kashmiri and Mughal styles can be fetched at real affordable prices. Durries are thick cotton floor spreads that are finely woven incorporating beautiful designs. Woven in the villages around Jodhpur, these are made using very beautiful light colors that now even adorn on the walls of up-market hotels! Durries are woven all over the country where skilled labour is available cheaply. Durries-Making which dates back to very ancient days in India had been popular in eastern and northern Rajasthan, meeting a steady demand from the court and the general public.

Carved sandalwood is presented in wide range of objects like desert caravan with tiny camels, Lord Krishna playing the flute in a divine mood or nymphs in aesthetic dance poses. Also available is fragrant sandalwood key chains, paper knives and trinklet boxes.

Furniture: The traditional furniture of Rajasthan is inlaid with brass sheet work or painted with dancing figures or embellished with hunting scenes. While Ramgarh,Shekhwati,Barmer and Bikaner are known for their carved wodden doors,chairs,tables and chests,Tilona furniture stands out for its fine embroidery work done on leather. Patra furniture which is planted with white metal has carved out its own market niche.

Toys and Dolls: Made of stuffed cloth decorated with tinsel and embroidered fabric figures of elephants and horses is Jaipur specially. Merta in Nagaur is known for soft tinted clay toys while Udaipur’s is famous for its wooden toys. Rajasthani puppets because of their exaggerated eyes and brightly coloured dresses are eye catching and impressive.
