Getting Around Jaipur

Filed under:

With a populations of 2.7 million (as of 2003), Jaipur is a city of people, people, everywhere. This means traffic, congestion, and crowds, and there are times you’ll get somewhere faster on foot than in a vehicle. This can be a good idea if you don’t plan on straying far from your hotel, but that’s not why you came, is it?

So, bicycles are hands down the least expensive way of getting around the city, but then again, they are the least safe as well, so nevermind. Elephants are slow, but they’ll get you where you want to go, and people will definitely move out of your way. In reality, transport-by-elephant really is an option for tourists in Jaipur. Camels, too.

But if none of the above options appeal to you, consider either a motorized or bicycle-powered rickshaw. The former is India’s version of a taxi, and because of its size, is more efficient on the country’s crowded streets. A bicycle-powered rickshaw is smaller, but costs less and is pollution-free, if that’s a concern.

State Roadways Transport is India’s official bus service, though several smaller mini-bus companies serve Jaipur also. The mini-buses are often packed, and even on the larger buses, you’ll see passengers (mostly men) riding atop the buses, making them impromptu doubledeckers.

Car rental is really the only sane choice for getting around Jaipur. Even better, hire a chauffer, who’s experience will allow better maneuverance around the bicycles, rickshaws, elephants, camels, and bipeds you’re sure to meet along the way.

Reaching Jaipur by Rail

Reaching Jaipur by Rail? Jaipur is also well connected by trains. Jaipur is on the Broad Gauge and also the main railway junction of Rajasthan and hence connected to all the metro cities of India. The Pink City Express, Chetak Express and few other Jaipur-Delhi trains leave from the Old Delhi Railway Station in Delhi. However, if one has money and leisure, there is no better option than the Palace-on-Wheels, which leaves Delhi every Wednesday.

Road less travelled

Filed under:

The cabinet is considering construction of six expressways on arterial routes Delhi-Chandigarh, Mumbai-Vadodara, Delhi-Jaipur, Delhi-Meerut, Chennai-Bangalore and Kolkata-Dhanbad to make fantastically fast road travel a possibility.

Most, if not all, of these routes overlap with the Rs 58,000-crore National Highways Development Project (NHDP) to construct the golden quadrilateral and north-south-east-west corridors.

The proposal, which derives inspiration from the Mumbai-Pune expressway, urges people to hurtle along at an average speed of 90 km/hr, for a payment of more than Re 1 per kilometre as toll tax. The Mumbai-Pune expressway is in the red because travellers would rather use the old, toll-free road.

Feasibility studies, proposed to be carried out over the next eight or nine months, should be properly conducted on the new routes, to ensure there is no unnecessary duplication of existing road infrastructure, which would make the new state-of-the-art roads financially unviable.
